THE Tassie Spirit has made a mixed start to its Australian Netball League season.
In the opening round at the Silverdome in Launceston, the Spirit was victorious against the Canberra Darters on Saturday night, winning 52-38, before being soundly beaten by 2013 top-four side the Southern Force yesterday 36-58.
Sophie Gunn was on fire with her shooting in both games.
One of three in the squad who play in the Victorian State League, Gunn scored 40 of 48 attempts against the Darters and a perfect 23 out of 23 against the Force.
She was supported by Arrows’ Kate Costelloe, who buried 10 and seven in the weekend’s two matches, shooting at a high percentage.
The Spirit’s shooting was key against the Darters, with the opening two quarters tight.
The Spirit began to move away from the Canberra team in the third, and only allowed five goals in the final quarter to come away with a perfect start to their campaign.
They were brought back down to earth yesterday, with Force goalies Kylie Jarrett and Laura Packard on fire.
Jarrett scored 34 of her 39 attempts, while Packard’s 24 of 32 left the Spirit with a win and a loss for the weekend.
The Spirit faces a tough outing next up, going to NSW to take on the Blues and Waratahs on Saturday and Sunday.
In the competition’s other matches at the Silverdome as part of its opening weekend, the Force defeated the Queensland Fusion in a 50-48 thriller on Saturday night, while the Fusion consigned the Darters to another defeat yesterday, 67-41.
Good to see the Gunn is back in top form!!
